That is how we did it. As far as I know, that is the way it has always been done.

I mean, clearly Alexander the Great was an exception. But his empire fell apart on his death.
Wait - Rome. Rome is an exception. So is the Persian Empire, now that I think about it. And the British Empire as well, for that matter.
I would argue that building an empire and building a nation are very different things, now that I dig into it.
Empire is an expanding entity and a nation has fixed borders? Is that what you would say makes the difference?
